Is it time to upgrade your 360 camera? Let's find out.

Just one year after releasing the X4, Insta360 has launched the X5—a new 360˚ camera packed with improvements. But is it worth the upgrade? And what if you’re buying your first camera for VR training?

We compared the Insta360 X4, X5, and the Kandao QooCam 3 Ultra to help you make the right decision.

Camera Comparison – Key Specs

What’s New in the X5?

  • Better in low light – thanks to a larger sensor and Insta360’s new Pure Video mode.
  • Improved audio – wind-resistant mic layout delivers better outdoor sound.
  • Replaceable lens system  – lenses are now easily replaceable, making the X5 more durable.
  • Upgraded image processing – a larger sensor combined with three AI-powered chips delivers overall better video quality.

How do they compare?

While the X5 initially appears to be cheaper than the QooCam (€589 vs. €669), once you factor in all necessary accessories, the total cost is the same for both cameras.

What about accessories?

When building a professional VR filming setup, consider the total cost of the gear. Here’s what we recommend, no matter which camera you choose:

  • 256GB microSD card
  • 2 extra batteries
  • Charging case
  • Tripod (eye-level height)
  • Wireless mic system
  • Microphone receiver holder + cable (only if using 2 mics)
  • Microphone adapter (only for Insta360)

💸 Total setup cost with 2 mics: ~€1.100,- (Including X5 or QooCam 3 Ultra)

Our Verdict

So where does each camera land in the grand scheme of things? Which should you choose?

  • The Insta360 X5 is a great all-rounder. It’s easy to use, works well in most environments, and includes small but meaningful improvements over the X4, particularly in video quality and low-light conditions.
  • However, it’s not a massive leap from the X4 or QooCam 3 Ultra. Image quality is comparable, and if you already own one of those, upgrading may not be worth it unless you shoot a lot in low-light or outdoor environments.
  • The QooCam 3 Ultra remains a top pick for creators seeking 10-bit video and higher-resolution photos—if you’re comfortable editing color in post-production.

Final Advice

  • Already have an X4 or QooCam 3 Ultra? Stick with it unless you need better low-light performance or outdoor audio quality.
  • Still using an older camera, such as the X3 or GoPro Max? Now’s a good time to upgrade—newer sensors and image processing make a real difference.
  • Buying your first 360° camera?
    • Go for the X5 if you want simplicity and reliability
    • Choose QooCam 3 Ultra if you’re comfortable with video editing and color grading
